Comparing the performance of length estimators by Implementation the vertex chain code

Chain code is fundamental for many applications in image analysis and pattern recognition, because it reduces the amount of stored data and preserves the maintenance of data. The most famous chain code which applied in many applications is Freeman chain code. One of the other kinds of chain code is the Vertex Chain Code (VCC).The VCC proposed by Bribiesca and it has some preferences such as stable in shifting, turning, mirroring movement of image and has normalized starting point. In this paper, the VCC is applied for estimating the length of the digitized 2D curve. Three methods are focused in this work, first is the way Bribiesca proposed which is based on counting links between vertices, second is based on maximum length digital straight segments (DSSs) and the last is local metrics. The comparison is presented for length estimators after implementation of VCC with the real perimeter. It is for the first time that VCC is implemented in estimating the length of the digitized curve. The result shows the estimation by applying VCC is near to the real length and VCC is a suitable replacement in applications instead of freeman chain coed.
